Once again we will have two days of Workshops that will take place solely during the afternoon​, so that everyone gets a chance to participate.

Our dynamic system of Workshop sessions ​allows you to choose​ one ​Workshop per day. Each one integrates different sessions with different speakers, thus allowing for an all-around approach to various areas of a certain theme.

Um teste genético consiste na análise do nosso ADN, através de técnicas de biologia molecular, como a sequenciação de Sanger ou o NGS, onde é possível comparar o ADN analisado com o genoma de referência e identificar as alterações.

A avaliação do significado clínico de uma alteração genética (variante genética) no ADN de um indivíduo ajuda o médico a tomar decisões em relação ao seu utente. Por exemplo, em alguns casos, a identificação de uma determinada variante genética poderá informar acerca de opções de tratamento em determinados cancros (medicina personalizada); em outros casos, pode permitir tomar decisões sobre a descendência (teste pré-natal) ou pode ajudar a informar familiares em risco acerca de possíveis medidas preventivas. Podemos encontrar muitas variantes durante a sequenciação do ADN de um indivíduo, pelo que, uma das etapas importantes na interpretação da sequenciação é estabelecer qual é variante mais relevante para explicar um determinado fenótipo, olhando para várias fontes de evidência existentes.

Assim, a ACMG (American College of Medical Genetics) desenvolveu diretrizes e uma terminologia padrão para classificar variantes identificadas em genes que causam Doenças Mendelianas. Este sistema de classificação define cinco classes:
1.Benigna
2.Provavelmente benigna
3.Variante de significado clínico incerto (VUS)
4. Provavelmente patogénica
5.Patogénica.

Esta recomendação descreve o processo de classificação de variantes nestas categorias com base em critérios que usam diferentes tipos de evidência (dados populacionais, computacionais, funcionais, segregação, entre outros).
Neste workshop vamos explorar os critérios da ACMG e usar exemplos práticos para chegar a várias classificações de variantes identificadas em pacientes reais com cancro.

Handling a critical patient in the Emergency Department, (or in any other setting, for the matter) will definitely be one of the biggest challenges facing any young doctor. Would you ever learn to ride your bicycle without enduring a few falls? In fact, you don’t need to break any bone to become a proficient rider. Mistakes are intrinsic to human nature, so goes the saying “to err is human”. That was also IOM 1999’s landmark report title, as is WHO’s course on patient harm prevention. But error is also a formidable tool for learning, one that we use during our lifetime to improve our performance and evolve. During a 3-hour workshop, we will first talk about error as a learning tool, types of errors in Medicine, and the role of simulation in learning and error avoidance. The participants will be immersed in two different clinical scenarios and allowed (but not induced) to make errors, depending on whether their interpretation, interaction and decision are correct or not. The course of action will then be debriefed with the help of trained instructors.

Would you ever learn to ride your bicycle without enduring a few falls? In fact, you don’t need to break any bone to become a proficient rider. Mistakes are intrinsic to human nature, so goes the saying “to err is human”. That was also IOM 1999’s landmark report title, as is WHO’s course on patient harm prevention. But error is also a formidable tool for learning, one that we use during our lifetime to improve our performance and evolve. During a 3-hour workshop, we will first talk about error as a learning tool, types of errors in Medicine, and the role of simulation in learning and error avoidance. The participants will be immersed in two different clinical scenarios and allowed (but not induced) to make errors, depending on whether their interpretation, interaction and decision are correct or not. The course of action will then be debriefed with the help of trained instructors.
