Prof. Dr. Isabel Pavão Martins is a Neurologist and Professor of Neurology at the Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de Lisboa. She leads the Headache consultation at Hospital de Santa Maria and directs the Centro de Estudos Egas Moniz. Prof. Pavão Martins trained in Lisbon and London, focusing her research on headaches and behavioural neurology, with around 200 publications. She has served as President of the Sociedade Portuguesa de Neurologia and the Conselho Pedagógico da Faculdade de Medicina de Lisboa, underscoring her significant contributions to neurology and medical education.
Prof. Julia Gover is a Community Pain Champion for the Flippin' Pain Campaign, advocating for modern pain science. With over a decade of experience as a chiropractor, she serves as Secretary of the Specialist Pain Faculty at the Royal College of Chiropractors and is a trustee and council member. Prof. Gover's work focuses on engaging healthcare professionals and the public to improve understanding and management of persistent pain, significantly contributing to enhanced pain management practices and patient outcomes. Her efforts in education and advocacy have positioned her as a key figure in the field of pain science.
Prof. Carl Philpott is a leading expert in Rhinology and Olfactology at the University of East Anglia and Honorary Consultant Rhinologist at James Paget and Norfolk & Norwich University Hospitals. He holds degrees from Leicester and the Royal College of Surgeons of England. Prof. Philpott has pioneered ENT image-guided sinus surgery and leads substantial research, including the NIHR MACRO Programme Grant. He has received numerous awards, such as the UEA Public Engagement Award, and serves in editorial roles for Clinical Otolaryngology and Rhinology Journal, highlighting his considerable contributions to medical research and practice.
Prof. Anya Hurlbert is Professor of Visual Neuroscience and Dean of Advancement at Newcastle University. She co-founded the Institute of Neuroscience and directs the Centre for Transformative Neuroscience.
With degrees from Princeton, Cambridge, MIT, and Harvard, her research focuses on human vision and colour perception. Prof. Hurlbert has over 200 scientific publications and has received awards including the Newton Medal and the Edridge-Green Medal. She serves on various scientific committees and boards, including the National Gallery and the Science Museum Group, demonstrating her influence and leadership in visual neuroscience.
Prof. Dr. Hugo Pinto Marques is the Head of the Surgical Department at CHULC and a Professor of General Surgery at NOVA Medical School. A hepatobiliary surgeon at Champalimaud Foundation, he specializes in hepatobiliary surgery, transplantation and laparoscopic liver surgery. Prof. Pinto Marques has significantly contributed to innovative surgical techniques and practices. His leadership in surgery and education is evident through his roles in clinical and academic settings, advancing surgical care and training future surgeons. He is dedicated to enhancing surgical methods and improving patient outcomes through cutting-edge surgical practices.
Dr. Bon Verweij earned his medical degree from Leiden University and completed a neurosurgery residency at the University Medical Center Utrecht (UMCU), where he was awarded a two-year vascular fellowship from the Dutch Brain Foundation. He continued at the UMCU for 20 years with clinical focus on vascular, trauma, and craniofacial reconstruction. He worked at two of the busiest trauma centers in the United States: the Detroit Medical Center and UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento, California. He completed a PhD on Mitochondrial Dysfunction in Neurotrauma. His research is focused on vascular neurosurgery and the integration of innovative cutting-edge technologies, such as 3D printing, VR/ AR and AI, to enhance patient outcomes and safety—an interest sparked by his training as a pilot. He is dedicated to teaching. He served as the first Chair of the EANS Young Neurosurgeons Committee and enjoys engaging the public through lectures, including a TEDx talk, to make science more accessible and inspiring.
Prof. Olle Ljungqvist received his medical degree and PhD on glucose metabolism in hemorrhage at the Karolinska Institutet, Sweden. He completed his residency and held clinical positions in gastrointestinal surgery at the Karolinska Hospital and was appointed Professor of Surgery at rebro University, Sweden in 2009, retiring in 2023. He chaired the Center for Gastrointestinal Disease at Ersta hospital and co-founded the Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS®) Society in 2010, serving as Executive Chairman until 2022. His research interests include surgical stress, metabolism, and nutrition, with a focus on ERAS, resulting in over 325 publications. He has co-edited several international textbooks and delivered numerous international lectures.
Prof. Joana Cardoso Vaz is a specialist in cancer genomics, with over 20 years of experience working closely with clinicians. She holds an MSc in Human Genetics from the University of Lisbon and a PhD in Biomedical Sciences from the University of Leiden. Her expertise in oncogenomics was honed during her PhD and further developed in post-doctoral research at the Instituto de Medicina Molecular and Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência, focusing on advanced genomic technologies. She is a co-founder and the Chief Scientific Director of Ophiomics, a Portuguese medtech company, where she integrates bioinformatics, AI, and genomics to create innovative diagnostic tools that support oncology treatment and clinical follow-up.
Prof. Dr. Helena Canhão is the Dean and Professor of Medicine at NOVA Medical School and Head of the Reumatology Unit at Hospital São José in Lisbon. She holds a PhD in Medicine from Universidade de Lisboa and a Masters in Clinical Research from Harvard. Prof. Canhão leads the Compreensive Health Research Center and REAL, co-chairs AICIB's Advisory Board, and co-leads the Patient Innovation Project. With over 300 publications in medicine and reumatology, she has made significant contributions to her field. Her leadership in research and education underscores her commitment to advancing medical science and improving patient care.
Dr. Miet Vandemaele is a resident in Radiation Oncology at Ghent University Hospital, Belgium. Currently, combining her medical training with research as a PhD fellow, focusing on improving access to high-value radiotherapy interventions for patients in the Value-Based Radiation Oncology initiative of the European Society for Radiotherapy and Oncology (ESTRO-VBRO). She was a board member for the Flemish association of medical residents (Vlaamse vereniging voor Arts-Specialisten in Opleiding – VASO) for several years, representing the interests of residents-in-training to educational and policy stakeholders and focusing on topics such as working conditions for residents and improvement of education.
Prof. Peter Indra is an orthopedical surgeon and health economist with a Master of Public Health from the Universities of Zurich, Bern, and Basel. He worked in various Swiss hospitals before shifting to health economy and politics. At Helsana, Switzerland's largest health insurance company, he developed managed care and later served as Vice Director of the Federal Office of Public Health in Bern, overseeing the national health, injury, and military insurances. From 2010, he led SWICA and managed Basel's healthcare system. Since April 2021, he directs the Office of Public Health for Zurich. He also served on several commissions, including the Drug Commission, and played a pivotal role during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Prof. Inês Fronteira holds a BSc in Nursing, an MSc in Public Health, and a PhD in International Health, with a specialty in Health Policies. She has a Habilitation in Public Health – Epidemiology. A professor at the NOVA National School of Public Health and a member of the Comprehensive Health Research Center, she also serves on the National Ethics Council for Life Sciences and the National Ethics Committee for Clinical Research. Prof. Fronteira leads the Portuguese team of the European Observatory on Health Systems and heads the NOVA Health System and Policies Group. She is on the Scientific Advisory Board of the European Health Management Association and editor-in-chief of BMC Human Resources for Health. Her research primarily focuses on Health Services, Policies, and Human Resources for Health.

Dr. Lowy co-developed the preventive HPV vaccines and has received notable accolades, including the Albert B. Sabin Gold Medal Award and the Lasker-DeBakey Clinical Medical Research Award. As a member of the National Academy of Sciences, he has significantly contributed to SARS-CoV-2 serology research during the COVID-19 pandemic, highlighting his vital role in public health advancements.
Prof. Michael J. Sofia is Co-founder and Chief Scientific Officer of Arbutus Biopharma, Inc. He is renowned for discovering Sofosbuvir, a crucial component of curative hepatitis C therapies. Prof. Sofia has held prominent positions at Gilead Sciences and Bristol-Myers Squibb. He obtained his Ph.D. from the University of Illinois and was an NIH postdoctoral fellow at Columbia University. His numerous awards include the Economist Innovation Award and the Lasker-DeBakey Clinical Medical Research Award. Prof. Sofia is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry and has been inducted into the American Chemical Society Medicinal Chemistry Hall of Fame.

Professor Terry Martin is a Consultant in Intensive Care Medicine and Anaesthesia with a robust background in Emergency Medicine, Aerospace Physiology, and Pre-hospital Care. An experienced helicopter pilot, he is passionate about the safe and efficient resuscitation, optimization, and transport of patients by air. Terry has authored numerous textbooks, academic papers, and video journals globally and has taught and examined healthcare professionals in the UK, New Zealand, and Canada. He has been instrumental in establishing new air ambulance organizations in the UK, Ireland, New Zealand, and the Middle East. A prolific writer on aeromedical safety, Terry has received numerous accolades, including NASA's Young Scientist of the Year award, and is a founding member of ICARUS.
Prof. Tiffany Ma completed her CRUK RadNet Centre postdoctoral fellowship at Oxford University’s Department of Oncology, focusing on hypoxia and the tumour microenvironment. From California to Hong Kong, she earned a Bachelor’s in Molecular Cell Biology from UC Berkeley, with minors in Bioengineering and Gender Women’s Studies, followed by a Master’s in Translational Medicine, completing her DPhil in Oncology at Oxford University. She is a Discovery Immunomics Scientist at Infinitopes Cancer Vaccines, leading immunopeptidomics and mass spectrometry for novel antigen discovery. Prof. Ma co-founded GambitBio and has been a fellow at Old Silver Venture Capital and Oxford Saïd Business School. She is a TEDx speaker and a finalist for Cancer Research Horizons' Early-career Entrepreneur of the Year Award, 2024.
Dr. Filipe Quinaz is a passionate advocate for technology's transformative impact on individuals' lives. With a master's degree in computer engineering, he has a strong academic foundation, further enriched by his teaching and research roles at the University of Beira Interior. His work there established a vital connection between academia and industry, fostering an entrepreneurial spirit among students and colleagues. Dr. Quinaz temporarily paused his Ph.D. in Biomedicine to pursue an innovative idea that culminated in the creation of Nuada. As a key contributor, he played a pivotal role in developing Nuada's patented system, which is designed to assist individuals in regaining hand function, reflecting his commitment to improving lives through technological advancement.

Dr. Peter Hughes is a distinguished psychiatrist with extensive experience in clinical psychiatry and humanitarian mental health. He has committed his career to improving mental health care in challenging environments, focusing on training, capacity building, and integrating mental health services into primary care in low-resource settings. In 2024, Dr. Hughes served as a Consultant Psychiatrist for the International Red Cross in Syria, providing vital psychiatric care in conflict zones. He has also consulted for the WHO in Armenia, Azerbaijan, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Sierra Leone, delivering mental health and psychosocial support services. At the Royal College of Psychiatrists, he has chaired important committees and co-founded the Syrian Refugee Task Force, earning him awards such as the RCPsych Volunteer of the Year and a Presidential Medal.
Dr. Maria Guevara is the current MSF International Medical Secretary. She is a multilingual medical humanitarian specialist with a medical doctor profile, trained in pulmonary, critical care and tropical medicine, and a strong background in complex humanitarian settings, global health policy, and advocacy. She has over 20 years of humanitarian experience and over 10 years management practice through her work with Medecins Sans Frontieres/Doctors Without Borders. Her extensive humanitarian field work has spanned across countries in Africa, Americas, and Asia in both emergency and stable settings as well as being the organization's Regional Representative in Asia from 2012 to 2017 and was the Senior Coordinator on Attacks on Healthcare for MSF from 2017-2018, leading reflections on the protection of the medical mission. Her special interests and passion are Global Health, Response in Emergencies, Health Security and Planetary Health.
Dr. João Antunes is the General Director of Médicos Sem Fronteiras in Portugal, leading the establishment of the organization's Portuguese section since its inception in 2019. He graduated from the Instituto Superior de Economia e Gestão and has over a decade of field experience across numerous countries. Dr. Antunes has been at the forefront of some of the world's most severe humanitarian crises, bringing essential medical services to those in dire need. His extensive experience in emergency response and crisis management has significantly contributed to the organization's impact and outreach in challenging environments.
